In short
- The main eyebrow shapes: soft arch, high arch, rounded, angular, straight and upward.
- Shape follows face shape: an arch lengthens a round face, straight eyebrows shorten a long one, rounded brows soften an angular one.
- Eyebrow mapping with a pencil finds the start, the arch and the end.
- For eyebrow shaping you can tweeze, wax or thread; dermatologists rate eyebrow threading as gentle and precise.
- Remove less than you think you need: after years of plucking some hairs do not grow back.
Shape changes a face more than colour or thickness: the same brows, lifted into an arch or flattened into a line, make a face look sterner, softer, longer or shorter. This guide shows the main eyebrow shapes on one face, explains how to find your own and compares the ways of shaping them.
It is part of our eyebrow series. For the history of brow fashion and the trends of 2026, see the main guide: Eyebrow trends: from 1920s pencil lines to 2026.
The main eyebrow shapes

These are not strict categories: most brows are a mix. What matters is knowing what each line does to a face and nudging your own brows in the right direction rather than redrawing them.
Eyebrow shapes for your face shape
| Face shape | Brows that suit it | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Oval | Soft arch | The proportions are balanced; keep them |
| Round | Higher arch, angular | A vertical line visually lengthens the face |
| Square | Rounded or soft arch | A curve softens an angular jaw |
| Long | Straight eyebrows | A horizontal line shortens the face |
| Heart | Softly rounded, not too thick | Does not weigh down a wide forehead |
| Diamond | Curved or rounded | Softens wide cheekbones |
To work out your face shape, see hairstyles for your face shape. Eye spacing matters too: with wide-set eyes the brow can start closer to the nose; with close-set eyes, a little further out.
Eyebrow mapping: the three-point rule

- Start. Hold a pencil upright against the side of your nose. Where it crosses the brow above the inner corner of the eye, the brow should begin.
- Arch. Angle the pencil from the side of the nose past the outer edge of the pupil. That is the highest point.
- End. Angle it from the side of the nose past the outer corner of the eye. That is where the brow ends.
Mark the three points with a light pencil and join them: you now have a frame, and hairs growing outside it can go. The tail should not sit lower than the start, or the face looks tired.
Eyebrow shaping: tweezing, eyebrow waxing or eyebrow threading

| Method | Pros | Cons | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tweezing | Precise, cheap, can be done at home | Slow; easy to overdo | Keeping a shape between appointments |
| Eyebrow waxing | Fast, removes down as well, smooth skin | Heat and wax ingredients can irritate; not for retinoid users | Dense brows and resilient skin |
| Eyebrow threading | A very exact line, no heat or chemicals, little irritation | Needs a skilled threader; hard to do yourself | Sensitive and acne-prone skin |
Threading vs waxing
The American Academy of Dermatology describes threading as being as precise as plucking but much faster, and says it causes little irritation, which makes it an option for sensitive or acne-prone skin. A Cleveland Clinic dermatologist calls it gentler than waxing, because there is no heated wax that can burn or trigger an allergy. Dermatologists advise against waxing if you take isotretinoin or took it within the past six months, or if you apply tretinoin to your skin.
How to shape eyebrows at home
- Tweeze after a shower or a warm compress: hairs come out more easily.
- Work in daylight with an ordinary mirror. A magnifying mirror makes you see too many "unnecessary" hairs.
- Mark the shape first with a pencil, using the three points.
- Remove only hairs clearly outside the shape, and only from below and between the brows.
- Pull in the direction of growth, holding the skin with your other hand.
- Every few hairs, step back and look at your whole face.
Leave the upper line and any thinning of the brow to a professional: mistakes there show most and take longest to grow out.
The most common mistakes
- Keep your natural shape and simply tidy it.
- Treat your brows as sisters, not twins: perfect symmetry does not exist.
- Fill gaps with pencil instead of thinning the brow down to the gap.
- Leave 3–4 weeks between shaping sessions.
- Plucking from above and thinning "for fashion".
- Starting the brow too far from the nose: the nose looks wider.
- Cutting the tail too short: the face looks wider.
- Correcting one brow against the other until both are too thin.
If you have over-plucked
Brows usually grow back, but slowly, over several months. Leave them completely alone meanwhile, even if the hairs come in untidily: fill gaps with pencil or powder and brush stray hairs with gel. After many years of plucking some hairs may never return. Then eyebrow tinting brings out the fine hairs, brow lamination spreads them over the gaps, and microblading or powder brows rebuild the shape.
For models: the shape for a casting
Agencies ask for one thing: natural, tidy brows. Go to a casting with your own shape, having removed only the hairs clearly outside it. Avoid thin, sharply angular or overdrawn brows: the client wants a face a make-up artist can turn into any look. Which shape suits your face best can be discussed in an image consultation.
Frequently asked questions
What are the different eyebrow shapes?
The main ones are soft arch, high arch, rounded, angular, straight and upward. Most people have a mix of two.
Which eyebrow shape suits my face shape?
A higher arch suits a round face, straight eyebrows a long face, rounded brows a square face and a soft arch an oval face. Above all, stay close to your natural shape.
Is eyebrow threading better than waxing?
Threading is precise and causes little irritation, so it suits sensitive skin. Waxing is fastest but can irritate. Tweezing is the handiest for upkeep at home.
How often should you shape your eyebrows?
Usually every 3–4 weeks. Between appointments, tweeze only the hairs clearly outside the shape.
Does eyebrow threading hurt?
You feel a brief sting, but the hairs come out so fast that many people find it less unpleasant than plucking one by one.
What is eyebrow mapping?
Finding the start, the arch and the end of the brow with a pencil held against the side of the nose: straight up, past the outer edge of the pupil, and past the outer corner of the eye.
Can you wax your eyebrows while using retinoids?
Dermatologists advise against it: retinoids thin the top layer of skin and wax can lift it off. Choose threading or tweezing instead.
