In short
- Eyebrow tinting colours the hairs, so fair or faded brows look more defined for 3–6 weeks without make-up.
- A tint colours the hairs; henna also stains the skin, so the shape looks fuller.
- Choose a shade close to your natural one: brows tinted too dark look drawn on.
- Patch-test 48 hours ahead, even if you have never reacted before.
- Never use hair dye on eyebrows: it can injure the eyes.
Eyebrow tinting is the simplest brow treatment that lasts: it takes about a quarter of an hour and the result holds for weeks. It is also dye right next to the eyes, so it matters which product you use and how you avoid an allergic reaction.

What eyebrow tinting does
A tint darkens every hair, including the fine pale ones at the edges of the brow that normally go unseen. So the brow looks not just darker but denser and wider. It does most for blondes, for faded or greying brows and for anyone who pencils their brows in every day.

Tinting does not change the shape and does not fill patches where there are no hairs. Shape is a job for eyebrow shaping; gaps need make-up or microblading or powder brows.
Eyebrow tint or henna brows
| Eyebrow tint | Henna brows | |
|---|---|---|
| What it colours | Mainly the hairs | The hairs and the skin beneath |
| How it looks | Natural, like your own darker brows | Bolder, as if filled in with powder |
| How long on hair | 3–6 weeks | Several weeks |
| How long on skin | A few days | Longer than tint, but shorter than on hair |
| Best for | Dense but fair brows | Sparser brows that need a fuller shape |

The word "henna" on a box does not mean the product is purely plant-based: some mixes contain the same synthetic dyes as an ordinary tint. A patch test is needed either way.
How to choose a shade
- Fair hair: one or two shades darker than your hair, warm or cool brown to match its tone.
- Brown and dark hair: the same tone as your hair or slightly lighter.
- Avoid black unless your hair and brows are naturally black. On fair skin it looks hard and ageing.
- Greying brows suit a grey-brown: it covers the white hairs without a harsh contrast.
If you are torn between two shades, take the lighter: going darker next time is easy, lightening brows that are too dark is not. Time controls the result too: the shorter the tint stays on, the softer the colour.
How a salon tint works
- The brows are cleansed and degreased.
- A barrier cream goes around the brows so the tint does not stain skin outside the shape.
- The tint is mixed and brushed onto the hairs.
- It is left for a few minutes, depending on the depth you want.
- It is wiped off with a damp pad and the shape is refined.
The whole thing takes around 15 minutes. It is often paired with shaping, and sometimes with brow lamination.

Eyebrow tinting at home
- Test. Put a little mixed tint on your inner forearm or behind the ear and wait 48 hours. If redness, swelling or blisters appear, do not use the product.
- Prep. Clean make-up and cream off the brows. Put a rich cream or petroleum jelly around them.
- Mix. Follow the maker's instructions exactly and mix only enough for one use.
- Apply. With an angled brush, work from the middle of the brow to the tail and leave the start for last: that is where the colour should be softest.
- Time. The first time, leave it on for less than the stated time and check. You can repeat; you cannot wash out a shade that is too dark.
- Remove. Wipe with a damp cotton pad from nose to temple, eyes closed.
If tint gets into your eye, rinse at once with plenty of water, and see a doctor if the eye stays red or painful.
How long does eyebrow tint last
On the hairs the colour typically lasts 3–6 weeks. On skin the stain fades within days, faster on oily skin. Oil-based cleansers, exfoliants, saunas, pools and sun all shorten it. To make it last, keep the brows dry and free of oily products for the first day.
Safety: why hair dye is not eyebrow dye
The skin around the eyes is thin, and the product sits millimetres from the eye. Hair dye is not made for this area: the US Food and Drug Administration warns that using it on eyebrows or eyelashes can injure the eyes and even cause blindness. The American Academy of Ophthalmology adds that people can become sensitive to a dye they have tolerated before, so a patch test is not only for the first time.
- A product made for eyebrows and eyelashes.
- A patch test 48 hours ahead.
- Barrier cream around the brow.
- Eyes closed, timing respected.
- you plan to use hair dye;
- the skin around your brows is irritated, broken or sunburnt;
- a previous tint made you itch, swell or break out;
- you have an eye infection.
For models: tinted brows and castings
A soft tint close to your natural colour does not get in the way of modeling work. A strong dark tint, or henna with a skin stain, changes the face and lasts for weeks, so skip it before an open call or a casting. On a shoot the make-up artist will take your brows to whatever depth the job needs.
Frequently asked questions
How long does eyebrow tint last?
Typically 3–6 weeks on the hairs and a few days on the skin, depending on skin type, aftercare and how fast your hairs grow.
What is the difference between an eyebrow tint and henna brows?
A tint colours mainly the hairs and looks more natural. Henna also stains the skin, so the shape looks fuller and more graphic.
Can you use hair dye as eyebrow dye?
No. Hair dye is not made for eyebrows and eyelashes and can injure the eyes. Use only products made for this area.
What shade of brow tint should you choose?
For fair hair, one or two shades darker than the hair; for dark hair, the same tone or slightly lighter. Black suits only naturally black hair.
Do you need a patch test every time?
Always before a first tint and whenever you change product. Sensitivity can develop later, so stop if itching or redness appears.
What if your eyebrows are tinted too dark?
The colour is strongest in the first days and softens by itself. An oil-based cleanser speeds that up, but do not scrub: irritated skin looks worse than dark brows.
Is eyebrow tinting safe during pregnancy?
Ask your doctor. Skin is often more sensitive in pregnancy, which makes the patch test even more important.
