How to recognise it
A shirt collar, metal buttons, two flapped chest pockets, a yoke across the shoulders and an adjustable buttoned waistband. Contrast stitching shows.
Where it comes from
Levi's introduced its first denim jacket in the early 20th century, and the 1962 Type III, called the trucker, became the classic still copied today.
Who and when it suits
A versatile spring and summer jacket: it goes over a dress, a skirt, trousers and even jeans if the washes differ. It pulls a casual outfit together.
Variations and look-alikes
It comes light, dark or black, fitted, oversized or cropped, with a sherpa lining for winter or without. A longer, thigh-length version is a denim coat. It differs from a shirt jacket in its rigid denim and waistband. A well-worn vintage jacket is often softer and more comfortable than a new one.
How to style it
- Over a maxi or slip dress.
- With jeans, choose a different wash.
- An oversized version works as a light coat.
- Roll the sleeves once or twice.
