Fit model

Also called: fitting model

A fit model is the person on whom designers and pattern makers try and correct garments while they are being developed; their measurements become the collection's standard.

How it works

A fit model works not in front of a camera but in a studio. They wear trial garments while the team checks how they sit, where they pull and whether you can move comfortably, and adjusts the patterns. All other sizes are later graded from their figure.

So what matters most is not the face or height but exact, stable measurements matching the brand's base size, and the ability to say clearly how a garment feels.

Fit modeling is often long-term: a brand works with the same person season after season. It is one of the steadiest areas of the profession.

In practice

A Lithuanian clothing brand calls the same model in every week to try trial garments for the new collection. The pattern maker watches where the jeans pull at the hips, the model says the waistband digs in when she sits, and the pattern is corrected. All other sizes are later graded from her size 38.

What to watch for

  • A change of even 1–2 cm in measurements can cost the job.
  • Learn to describe where a garment is tight or loose.
  • Record your fittings: hours are often paid at an hourly rate.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked

01Does a fit model need to be tall?

No. They must match the brand's base size, which can be an average height or a plus-size figure.

02How is a fit model different from a pre-show fitting?

A fit model works while garments are developed; a pre-show fitting adapts finished garments to a particular model.
