Modeling competitions: how Elite Model Look and model searches work

In short

  • A modeling competition, or model search, is a talent hunt run by a modeling agency. The prize is not a crown but a contract with the agency and the chance to work as a model.
  • The best-known contest still running is Elite Model Look, created by John Casablancas in 1983. Entry is free, open from age 14, and only through the official website.
  • Ford Supermodel of the World was the Ford Models contest started in the early 1980s. It no longer runs in that form.
  • A contest is not the only way in. Most models are found through year-round agency applications, open calls and scouts. If anyone asks you to pay to enter, it is not a professional competition.

Say "modeling competition" and many people picture a beauty pageant with evening gowns and a crown. It is a different event altogether. A modeling competition is run by an agency or a network of agencies, and its goal is to find someone the agency can work with for years. The judges are agents and scouts, not an audience, and they are looking at how a face and body will read in photographs and on the runway, not at a smile on stage.

This guide explains how a model search differs from a pageant and an agency open call, how Elite Model Look works, what Ford Supermodel of the World was, how to prepare an application and how to spot a contest that only exists to collect fees. At the end we look at whether to wait for a contest or apply to an agency directly.

What is a modeling competition

A modeling competition is a form of model search in which an agency collects applications over a set period, invites the strongest candidates to castings and picks one or more winners at a final. Winners are offered a contract with the agency, sometimes with the whole agency network in several countries. Finalists who do not win often get offers too, because agents have seen them in person.

For the agency, a contest is a way to see many people quickly and to create attention: magazines cover the final and the winner's story advertises the agency. For an entrant, it is a chance to be seen by agents they would not otherwise reach. But a contest is only the start. Afterwards comes ordinary model work with test shoots, castings and travel, which we describe in how to become a model.

Model search vs beauty pageant vs open call

The three sound similar but have different goals, judges and outcomes.

We cover pageants in depth in pageant vs modeling. How agency castings work is explained in model casting: how to prepare, and there is a short definition of an open call in our glossary.

Elite Model Look: history and rules

Elite Model Look is the contest of the Elite agency network. It was created in 1983 by John Casablancas, founder of Elite Model Management, and was originally called The Look of the Year. According to Elite, thousands of contestants from about sixty countries took part each year. The contest credits itself with discovering models such as Cindy Crawford, Stephanie Seymour and Gisele Bündchen.

Who can enter

  • From age 14. Applicants under 18 need permission from a parent or guardian.
  • One entry per person per year.
  • Applications only through the official website, not through social media.
  • You can apply from any country. Where there is a national casting, successful applicants are invited to attend it.
  • Elite says it no longer has an international height requirement: no minimum and no maximum.

Cost and prize

Entry is free everywhere in the world. The official FAQ states that no reputable agency will ever ask you to pay to become a model, and asks people to report anyone requesting money to enter. Elite pays flights and accommodation for those who reach the World Final. The prize is the chance of a contract with the Elite network.

Young people from the Baltics take part too: the 2026 finalists listed on the official site include an entrant from Lithuania.

Ford Supermodel of the World: what it was

Ford Models is the agency founded in New York in 1946 by Eileen and Gerard Ford. In the early 1980s it launched an international contest first called Face of the 80s and later Ford Models Supermodel of the World. Sources give different start years, 1980 or 1981. The contest drew tens of thousands of hopefuls from around the world every year.

The agency later changed owners, and the contest no longer runs in its original form. Its tradition continued as the V/VMan Ford Model Search, run with V and VMan magazines. If you see an ad for a "Ford Supermodel of the World" casting today, check that it comes from Ford Models and not from someone borrowing a famous name.

Other ways agencies find new faces

Contests are the most visible route, but most models start another way.

  • Year-round online applications. Almost every agency accepts applications through its website: a few simple photos, height, measurements and age.
  • Open calls. On a set day the agency invites anyone to come in. It is a quick way to get an answer in person.
  • Scouts. Agency scouts look for new faces on the street, at festivals and on social media. See model scout.
  • Mother agencies. A local agency discovers a model and later places them with bigger agencies abroad. See mother agency.
  • TV reality shows. For example America's Next Top Model, launched in the US in 2003, and its versions in other countries. It is an entertainment format: the winner gets a contract and attention, but the career afterwards depends on the same work as everyone else's.

What winners get, and what a contest does not guarantee

A win brings a contract and attention; the career comes from the work after it. The winner usually gets a contract with an agency or network, test shoots and first castings. From there it depends on clients: whether they book this model, whether the model is reliable and whether they adapt to different markets.

Many strong careers began with a contest the person did not win: agents saw them at the final and offered a contract. So treat a contest as a chance to be seen, not an exam that closes the road if you fail. For realistic numbers on what new models earn, read how much models make.

It also helps to understand the guaranteed contract: some agencies guarantee a new model a minimum sum abroad but deduct it from later earnings. Before you sign anything, read our guide to the modeling contract.

How to prepare for a modeling competition

  1. Simple photos. Elite Model Look asks for a face shot from the front, one from the side and a full-length body shot. Simple clothes, no make-up, no filters, daylight. A professional shoot is not needed. See digitals.
  2. Accurate measurements. Height, bust, waist, hips and shoe size. Measure without shoes, against a wall, ideally with someone's help.
  3. Parental consent. If you are under 18 it is required, and it is wise to attend castings with a parent.
  4. Movement. Finals and castings often include a walk. A natural, upright walk is enough. We cover the basics in how to walk like a model.
  5. Correct contact details. Agents reach you by the email and phone in your application, so double-check them.

How to spot a fake modeling competition

Famous contest names are sometimes used in scams, and some events call themselves "model searches" while earning their money from entry fees.

If you see even one red flag on the left, stop and check the organiser.
  • You are asked to pay a registration, entry or "portfolio" fee.
  • You must buy a photo shoot or a course from the organiser.
  • Applications are collected through private messages rather than an official website.
  • A contract or work abroad is "guaranteed" before any casting.
  • The organiser cannot be traced: no company name, address or agency website.

Contest or agency application: which to choose

A contest is worth trying if you fit its age range and want international network agents to see you. But you do not have to wait for one: agency applications are open all year and lead to the same result, an agency contract, without a final and without the feeling of losing.

If you are in the Baltics, you can apply to Supermodels, which looks for new faces continuously: women aged 14 to 22 and men aged 16 to 25. Supermodels has worked since 2001, is a member of the international M.A.M.A. association of model agencies, signs a contract with every model and places models abroad with partners such as NEXT, Wilhelmina, Elite and Women. For comparing agencies, see how to choose a modeling agency and our agency directory.

What to avoid

  • Paying to take part. Professional modeling competitions and agencies are free.
  • Professional shoots before applying. Agents want simple photos, not retouched portraits.
  • Contests promising a "guaranteed career". No win guarantees bookings.
  • Travelling alone as a minor. Under-18s should go to castings and finals with a parent or an agency representative.
  • Signing on the spot. Take the contract home and read it calmly.
  • Giving up after a loss. A contest result is one panel's opinion on one day. Other agencies may see you differently.

FAQ

What is a modeling competition?

A talent search run by an agency or agency network. Candidates apply, the strongest are invited to castings and a final, and winners are offered an agency contract.

Is a modeling competition the same as a beauty pageant?

No. In a modeling competition agents judge how you will look in photos and on the runway, and the prize is a contract. In a pageant a panel judges looks, speaking and stage presence, and the prize is a title.

How old do you have to be to enter Elite Model Look?

At least 14. Applicants under 18 need permission from a parent or guardian, and applications are accepted only through the official website.

Do you have to pay to enter a modeling contest?

Not for professional ones. Elite Model Look is free worldwide, and the organiser pays travel for World Finalists. A request for money is a red flag.

Does Ford Supermodel of the World still exist?

Not in its original form. The contest launched in the early 1980s later continued as the V/VMan Ford Model Search. Check any ad using the name against Ford Models' own channels.

Do you need to win a contest to become a model?

No. Most models start through agency applications, open calls or scouts. A contest is just one of several ways to be noticed.
