In short
- In menswear the term "plus size" is used less often. You will hear "big and tall", "brawn" or "extended fit": men with a broader chest, shoulders or frame, or a greater height.
- Agencies draw the line in different places. The Diversity Agency (London) treats a chest of 42 inches (about 107 cm) and up as plus size, Sandra Reynolds (London) says 46 inches (about 117 cm) or a height of 6'4" (193 cm), and Curve Models (Hamburg) asks for EU size 52 or more and 183 to 200 cm.
- These models are hired mostly for e-commerce, big and tall retail, tailoring, sportswear and advertising. It is commercial work, not muscle or runway modeling.
- An application needs four honest phone photos and accurate measurements. A real agency does not charge to register you.
Plus size modeling is usually discussed as a women's topic, and men barely appear in the conversation. Yet a market for larger menswear exists, and so does the need for models to show it. The Diversity Agency (TDA), a London agency, wrote in 2026 that of every hundred applications it opens only a handful are from bigger men, even though the work is there, so a strong male applicant stands out faster.
This article is part of the plus size modeling guide. It explains the terms, the size scales, the kinds of work and the first steps. Figures and conditions come from agencies' public pages and retailers' size charts, each with its source and year. If you are looking for fashion model standards for men, see male models.
What plus size means for men
In women's modeling "plus size" is the standard term. In menswear it is less common. Sandra Reynolds Agency (London) uses "brawn" and "big and tall", and TDA uses "big and tall" and "extended fit". TDA explains that big and tall is the menswear equivalent of "curve": when a brand cuts clothes for bigger men, it needs a model who fills that size.
"Large" can mean several things:
- Big (a broader frame): a larger chest and waist. The US retailer Lands' End defines "Big" as a body of 5'8" to 6'0" (about 173 to 183 cm) with a less athletic profile.
- Tall: longer sleeves and torso. The same retailer defines "Tall" as 6'1" to 6'3" (about 185 to 191 cm).
- Big and tall: both. Sandra Reynolds notes that plus size does not only refer to general size but also to men who are tall or have broader shoulders.
"Husky" is a US term for boys' clothing sizes. We found no use of it in the adult male modeling pages we reviewed, and some people dislike it, so with an agency say "big and tall" or give your measurements.
Men's size scales: where plus size starts
Menswear is sized by chest measurement, not by a dress size, so your chest, waist and height decide which jobs you are put up for. In Europe a men's jacket or suit size is roughly the chest in centimeters divided by two. The conversion below follows one manufacturer's chart and is approximate, since every brand differs.
| EU size | Chest, cm | Chest, inches |
|---|---|---|
| 48 | 96 | 38 |
| 50 | 100 | 40 |
| 52 | 104 | 41 |
| 54 | 108 | 42 |
| 56 | 112 | 44 |
| 58 | 116 | 46 |
| 60 | 120 | 47 |
| 64 | 128 | 50 |
| 68 | 136 | 54 |
In the Lands' End chart, big-size tops 2XL to 6XL correspond to a chest of 50 to 52 inches up to 66 to 68 inches (about 127 to 173 cm). Letter sizes vary between brands, so go by your own measurements.
Agencies set the plus size line in different places:
| Agency, country, year | What counts as plus size for men | Approx. EU size |
|---|---|---|
| The Diversity Agency, London, 2026 | Menswear sample sizes sit around a 38 to 40 inch chest. Plus size and big and tall cover a 42 inch chest and up, XL to 5XL, plus taller men who need long fits. Briefs run from a 44 to a 54 inch chest | from 54 |
| Sandra Reynolds, London, 2023 | Chest of 46 inches and above, or a height of 6'4" (about 193 cm) and above | from 58, or tall |
| Curve Models, Hamburg | Height 183 to 200 cm and a minimum size 52 | from 52 |
These figures do not so much contradict each other as show that "plus size man" is not a fixed category: each agency decides what it can sell to its clients. TDA says it directly: one brief wants a 44 inch chest and another a 54, so a good agency holds the whole range. For comparison, the fashion standard for male models (EU 48 to 50, 185 to 190 cm) is in male models, and general size scales are in the size guide and what is considered plus size.
Who hires plus size male models
TDA lists these clients in 2026. All of them are commercial:
- E-commerce. The main source of work: retailers shoot product for extended-size ranges. TDA calls it steady, repeatable work and the backbone of most commercial careers.
- Big and tall and extended-fit menswear. Specialist retailers and the extended ranges inside mainstream brands.
- Sportswear and activewear. Inclusive campaigns showing bigger bodies in motion.
- Tailoring and occasionwear. Suit retailers, formal hire, groomswear. TDA calls it a steady earner.
- Commercial and lifestyle. Supermarket, banking, telecoms, insurance, travel and charity campaigns that want to show real customers. TDA says these pay higher day rates and run longer usage than e-commerce.
- Grooming and beauty. Beard, skincare and barbering brands, where the face matters more than the build.
TDA also notes that brands have widened men's sizing in recent years and need models who fill those sizes. We found no public data on plus size male modeling in Lithuania. That does not mean there is no work, only that nobody has published figures. For more on men's modeling work, see male models, and for agencies see plus size modeling agencies.
Model training with SupermodelsTry it in practice with an agency teamIn the model training we work on the walk, posing and working on camera, one to one or in a small group.About the trainingfrom €69How it differs from fashion and fitness modeling
| Plus size male model | Fashion male model | Fitness model | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What is assessed | How clothes sit, face, ease on camera | Face, proportions, one sample size | Muscular physique |
| Typical work | E-commerce, advertising, tailoring, sportswear | Runway, magazines, campaigns | Sports and supplement advertising |
| Build | Larger size, not necessarily athletic | Slim or athletic, EU 48 to 50 | Muscular |
TDA calls it the single most common thing men get wrong: assuming a plus size man has to be muscular. In its words, a 46 inch chest with a good face and easy presence will out-book a 56 inch chest who is stiff on camera. You do not need an athletic build.
What agencies look for and what to send
TDA names these criteria: how clothes sit on you, an open face and good skin, well-kept hair or beard, an everyman quality, sizing that fits the brief, and professionalism. The measurements to send:

- height, chest and waist (the three that matter most);
- neck and jacket size, especially for tailoring casting;
- inside leg and shoe size;
- age, hair and eye color, city, and any visible tattoos or piercings.
Give accurate numbers. TDA's example: if you put a 44 inch chest on the form and turn up a 50, the brand has the wrong sample on the rail and you are not rebooked.
Photos for the application
You need four phone photos in daylight against a plain wall, with no filters: a front headshot, a side profile, a full-length front shot and a full-length side or back shot. Wear fitted plain clothes such as a t-shirt and jeans. The most common mistake is hiding the body in loose clothing, because the agency is casting how garments will sit on you. How much plus size male models make
We found no public pay figures for plus size male models, so we give only what we can support. TDA wrote in 2026 that male models in the UK are paid 10 to 30 percent less than women for the same brief, with the gap narrowing in grooming, menswear and at the top end. The same agency's general UK day rates are £150 to £400 for e-commerce and £400 to £1,500 for commercial and lifestyle, set by the type of job, not by size. For how pay works, see how much do models make and modeling rates, and for plus size women and a comparison of job types see plus size modeling jobs and pay.
How to get started
- Measure yourself. Height, chest, waist, neck, inside leg, shoe size. Ask someone to help.
- Take the four photos described above.
- Pick two or three agencies whose men's boards include men like you, and check their reputation with how to choose a modeling agency. We found no public evidence that Lithuanian agencies run a separate plus size men's board, which does not prove they do not: write and ask. The published requirements of Supermodels for men (age 16 to 25, 185 to 190 cm) are for fashion models, so ask directly through the open call page whether larger men are considered.
- Write a short note. Two or three sentences: age, city, what you want to model. No life story.
- Do not open with the rate. TDA's view is that rates are a conversation for the meeting, not the first email.
How to handle it, and what to avoid
Do
- Send accurate stats and unfiltered photos.
- Say whether you accept underwear or swimwear work and ask for the terms in writing.
- Read the modeling contract before you sign.
- Wear plain fitted clothes to a meeting so your build is visible.
Avoid
- An agency that asks for money upfront for registration, a "portfolio package" or training.
- Shirtless gym mirror photos: that is a different lane of modeling.
- Pressure to change your body for a job. Agencies ask for your size and measurements, not for you to change them. If thoughts about your body or eating trouble you, talk to your doctor or a support service in your country; in Lithuania call 116 123, or 112 in an emergency.
Frequently asked questions
Are there plus size male models?
Yes. TDA, Sandra Reynolds and Models Direct in the UK invite bigger men to apply, and Curve Models in Hamburg sets men's requirements at size 52 or more and 183 to 200 cm. The market is small but growing, though we found no statistics.
What size counts as plus size for a man?
There is no single answer. TDA says from a 42 inch chest (about EU 54), Sandra Reynolds from 46 inches (about EU 58) or 193 cm tall, Curve Models from EU 52. Each agency draws the line according to its clients.
Do I need to be muscular?
No. This is commercial work, not fitness modeling. Agencies look at how clothes sit on you, your face and your ease on camera.
Is there an age limit?
TDA says there is no upper limit: commercial and tailoring work casts men of all ages. Fashion work has tighter limits, see male models.
Do I need experience or a portfolio?
No. TDA says four phone photos and your real measurements are the whole application, and a paid pre-signing portfolio is money badly spent.
Do I have to pay to apply?
No. A real agency earns commission on work it books for you and does not charge for applying or for representation.
Do plus size men earn the same as women?
TDA says male models in the UK get 10 to 30 percent less for the same brief. We found no pay statistics specific to plus size men.
